Interior Design—McMahons Point, Sydney
The charming owners of this grand four story Victorian Terrace, with State Heritage significance, eloquently distressed its’ desperate need of a restoration, renovation and interior overhaul. Being heritage listed with the State Heritage Office meant the design proposal was dragged through a complex council approval process, with a Heritage Consultant to research the history of the house and give advice on the renovation. The result is a liberated interior with a restrained palette and heritage light fittings, a refreshed ornate detailing to the façade and landscaped, travertine tiled balconies.
Throughout the ground floor and basement the existing multi-surfaced floors were replaced with European oak herringbone parquetry planks that allowed the rooms to unify and reclaim value as the heart of the home. All fireplaces were restored complimented by new bookshelf joinery. New brass and heavy linen window treatments, plaster ceiling roses, Italian vintage light fittings, native flora wallpaper, paint, upgraded window and door hardware and cut-pile carpet with brass runner rods all assisted in the cause to make this beautiful terrace triumph in its new life.
The lower level transformed from a cold dark basement to an inviting self-contained floor for the clients’ adult daughter with an upgrade of lighting, window treatments, built-in joinery, warm oak flooring, painting, new utilities bathroom, laundry and butler kitchenette and revitalised terraces.
On the bedroom level, after swapping the office and master bedroom around to allow for a harbour vantage point from bed, each room received new materials and fittings including a walk-in robe, picture rails to hang esteemed accreditations, window treatments, wallpaper, timber work, fans, lighting, cut-pile carpet and again, travertine tiled landscaped balconies to create little oasis’s on the fringe of the city.
